Remembering "The Majestic"

I just sat down to watch the Majestic a few hours ago and, I had seen it when it first came out, but it didn't really leave an impact on me as it did today. Did you know, though, it was panned by critics when it came out? I knew this back then when it opened, but I'm still amazed that no one liked it. Seriously, a lot of hard work went into making this picture.

The sets, the costumes, the overall feel of the movie...it instantly transports you back to the past. You're taken to a town where everyone knows your name, you always have friends to see at the diner, the mayor is called "Ernie", everything is so simple. Back in Washington, of course, you have the Salem Witch Trials of the 50's, aka The Red Scare. Pure ridiculousness if you ask me.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you what happens. All I'm going to say is that you shouldn't always see movies based on what the critics say. They criticize; that's their job. If they don't bitch and moan, then what are they there for? Critics can make or break a movie/actor/director/producer/writer/etc. By saying this movie was crap, no one wanted to go see it. I saw it and thought it deserved a better reception.

If you like period pieces, Jim Carrey or love stories, you'll definitely enjoy "The Majestic". Give it a chance, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

LITTLE TIDBITS ABOUT THE MAJESTIC

Cliff Curtis, who stars as the Evil Prince Khalid, can now be seen on NBC's Trauma as Rabbit, the really cute life-saving pilot. Ay yi yi!

Roger Ebert, one of the better critics, actually liked the movie.

The voices of the unseen studio executives are those of Gary Marshall, Sydney Pollack, Rob Reiner and Carl Reiner.

Jim Carrey used this movie as an attempt to be a more serious actor, however the critics who panned the movie ruined this for him. It wasn't until "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" came out that people saw he could do the whole serious bit.

HAIRSPRAY 2?!?!?

Just watched Hairspray on my new Hi-Def flat screen, and thought I'd see what Nikki Blonsky and the rest of the cast were up to since the film came out. Upon searching, I came across "Hairspray 2". I was like, "What?!?!" You couldn't possibly do a sequel to a sequel of a sequel. Could you?

So here's what they plan to do in the 2:

1. John Waters has written a crazy treatment for the sequel called Hairspray 2: White Lipstick.
Gotta love John Waters. He's the King of Kitsch. Did you see him as the streaker in the movie?

2. Hairspray director/choreographer Adam Shankman and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are also set to return.
Boo.

3. The story will look at Tracy’s entering the late ’60s era of music, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the British invasion. “We’re trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements,” Shankman told EW.
All right, now! Maybe a mentioning of Jim Morrison wouldn't be too much to ask...

4. Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) is hated because she’s now famous but doesn’t lose weight.
My problem exactly.

5. Link (Zak Efron) gets a mop-top Beatles hairdo and tries to masquerade himself as a member of the British Invasion in an attempt to remain hip. The hair causes three pimples to spawn on his forehead, which he has “an ongoing dialogue” throughout half the movie. He also somehow accidentally experiments with acid. Shankman later said that Link’s drug storyline probably won’t make it into the final film.
Zacquisha? Pimples? Oh no no. Acid. Hell yea!

6. Edna (John Travolta) gets hooked on diet pills, actually loses weight, but sees her husband (Christopher Walken) lusting after fat women. Shankman told MTV, “she finally breaks down and runs over to a snack table. Just within one number, she gets fat again; gaining 20 pounds at a time. [Her fat] pops out, and by the end of the song she’s completely at her old weight again.”

7. Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer) will likely not appear in the sequel due to the introduction of a new villain.

8. Someone gets drafted into war, but it isn’t Link.
Gut feeling: Seaweed. He won't die, though. He'll get the purple heart, come back and marry Penny.

9. New Line/Warner Bros has yet to official announce any actors/actresses for the sequel, but they have said that they hope to keep most of the original cast.
Well we can only hope! Damn!

10. The film is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in mid-July 2010.
Wahoo!
